I stayed in the palm guesthouse in Pai, just around the corner from the main street. It was 500 baht for a double room, I think it was quite new. There were cheaper rooms I think for 300 baht as well.

Pai is a really nice place, hire a moped & explore the area, it's beautiful!

I don't know about it being the "Best Place in Pai", but I can recommend a place called "Pai in the Sky" - worth it for the pun alone! One Lady Owner - friendly as well. I seem to remember it being pretty cheap, a basic but clean room. Think we paid 2 or 300 for a double. They had a lovely veranda out the back overlooking a lily pond and a tribal settlement, perfect for beers and reflection to a symphony of crickets...

You'll have a great time in Pai.

we stayed in a place called 'blue house' on the main street - it was only 200baht per night for a double (low season) and its basic but clean and safe.

Stayed at Baan Pai Village, at the end of the main street down by the river. Adorable private bungalows with bath for 300 baht (double). Brand new buildings rebuilt after last year's flood.
