I booked a hotel last week for Rome and it turns out that the hotel doesn't have rooms available. This site site uses Hostelworld.com which charges a 10% deposit to reserve a room, non-refundable. Now I'm screwed out of some money. THe non-refundable part is total bullsh*t if the hotel really doesn't have a room available.

A word of advice, use this site to find what hotels are out there, and look up/google those hotel names and contact them directly.

I had problems with hostelworld. com in greece. We booked a triple ensuite bathroom to find out that was a dorm with lavabo. When we showed our confirmation at the hotel they said that this type of room did not exist in their hotel.

Hostelworld refused to help or refund us.

Made a booking through hostelworld.com for a place in Brussels a few weeks from now. After reading this I think I'll be contacting the hostel directly to confirm my booking before heading off there.

Why isn't anything ever simple?

Hi Glenn,

I have no problem with you airing your experiences on the forum, but you really should have contacted us first and given us (through the booking agency we use - which is the same one as used on Hostelworld) a chance to look into this.

Basically yes, the deposit + booking fee are non refundable but when the hotel or hostel makes a mistake (as must be the case here), then they have an agreement with our booking agency to either fully refund the deposit or to offer you alternative accommodation of the same quality at the same price.

Unfortunately, when dealing with over 15 000 properties around the world, some of the people involved in those properties will make a mistake from time to time in their availability allocations. One of the great things about working with this booking agency is that they have always treated customers fair whose bookings have fallen through due to a mistake made by the property. Even in extremely unlikely cases where the property then gives them a hard time, they have acted fairly towards the customer and dropped the property instead.

If you can send me a PM with your booking number, I'll arrange that refund and make sure the hotel gets a warning and a earful :)

flo jo, did you book through hostelworld.com or through Travellerspoint? If you booked through us, which it doesn't sound like since I would have remembered a case like this, let me know and I'll follow it up for you. In any case, this too sounds like a mistake made by the hotel (they put availability online and list the kind of rooms they have - naturally, as they know this information best).

Cheers,

Sam

Well, I emailed the hostel I am planning to stay in, and they replied within 24 hours to confirm the booking - so it appears hostelworld.com has worked successfully.

I did the same but lm still waiting on a reply - only just 24 hours though..............

I got a reply back from my hostel too - booking received no problem and they said they found hostelworld.com to be great - so it seems that this may be an isolated incident.

That's what I said isn't it :)

I still haven't received any word from the first poster, so I'm afraid I haven't been able to have the hotel refund them their 10% yet.... as per my first post, in rare cases these things can happen as there are humans working at the properties that have to manually process bookings on their side. And as we all know, humans can make mistakes

I've used hostelworld.com twice this year (Barcelona and Venice) and both times I've been very impressed with the accomodation we've ended up with for the prices we've paid. I've also decided on where we're staying if we make it to Dubrovnik in September which will also be through hostelworld.
