Hi there!

I'm taking a long leisurely road trip from the SF Bay area to the East Coast (Boston/NY, and eventually Austin, TX) and would like some good company whenever possible.

The plan is to leave on June 3/4 from the bay area, go along the Pacific Coast (with a detour through Ashland for the Shakespeare Festival) to Seattle, visit the Olympic and Mt. Rainier National Park , and then head east to Chicago via either Rt.2 (through Glacier National Park etc.) or Rt. 80 (Yellowstone, Zion, etc.) possibly through Twin Cities. From Chicago it's straight to Boston with a short stay en route with friends in Ithaca NY. My friends in Boston would accompany me to hiking in Maine (Mt. Katahdin). After a week or two there I'll hit the road again, travelling along the spine of the Appalachia (or hugging the east coast) to eventually Austin, Texas.

I have a good car, camping gear and a great reserve of good humour and conversation to last the trip. Looking for good-natured, intelligent, witty, flexible and adventurous companions for part or whole of the trip. Poetic spirits would be heartily welcomed; literary/philisophical/artistic/scientific interests greatly appreciated. I can speak some German, French, Spanish and Italian, so Europeans with the desire to improve my language skills are welcome to join and try! Should be self-sufficient in the matter of gear and money; I plan to stay at a combination of youth hostels/camp sites/friends. I am young-spirited male who wants to have some fun and adventure before going back to school to finish his math PhD.

Give me shout if you're heading that way!

have you considered getting from Chicago to Ithaca via Canada?

Heading east from Chicago you will end up on I-94 and if you don't turn north a bit to take the Windsor Tunnel or Ambassador Bridge or Port Huron Bridge to Canada and continue toward Niagara Falls for the sights and re-entry into the U.S. -- you will be traversing very flat northern Ohio...

Check it out! I know that is it the shortest path between Fort Wayne IN and Buffalo; it is certainly the most interesting one.

If you do this, and you like university towns, I must recommend Ann Arbor MI -- home of U of Michigan. Great town, lots going on all summer. See the following links for details of stuff going on in June. July is Art Fair month.

There are also great MetroParks that offer camping.

Thanks enormously, Kate, for the great suggestions and oodles of information on the Ann Arbor goings on. Ann Arbor is a lovely idea indeed. I may well make a stop there to say hello!
