I'm doing a south america trek with my sister in June, and I've been wondering if anyone has any experience of getting from Rio to Manaus; also if anyone's then crossed over into Peru from there. We're very flexible right now so any advice would be greatly appreciated
Take the bus Rio de Janeiro - Brasilia - Belem. I think there is a direct, otherwise you have to change in Brasilia.
In Belem you take the passangers boat to Manaus. You will sleep in hammock.
You have also a fly directly Rio - Manaus.
To reach Peru, take the passangers boat in Manaus to Benjamin Constant and further on to Peru.
Have a nice trip.
Thanks a lot, sounds exciting
I would also comment the following: Would you do this trip for seeing animals and birds in the Amazon forest? Don't do it! Because it is a long trip; Just to Manaus you will spend more than a week and also on more than a week to Peru. During the boattrip you will see nothing of "fauna and flora".
Would you see animals and birds, than you have to go to the Pantanal region on the border with Bolivia.
If you want, I can give you names and adresses of guides not expensive to lead you in this world. You will surely remember this region as the most beautiful in South America.
I am not connected to any tourist agency. I lived for many years in Brazil and made already more than 30 trips in the Pantanal and Amazon forest (2000km from
Let me know if you want mere details about.
How long are you in Brazil for? Brasilia is not renowned for being a great place to visit, have you thought about taking the coastal route to Belem? and then getting a boat to Manaus??
Another alternative is to get a cheap flight.
happy travelling, if you want any extra help I'm happy to answer any questions
Of Course Mim, but the question was :" How can I get to Manaus from Rio de Janeiro?" I said to take the bus via Brasilia. There is never spoken to stay at and to visit Brasilia. Can you give me by bus a shorter way to get Manaus from Rio? So yes, I will pay a hole trip to Brazil.
"Take a cheap fly". Ok, give me than the "cheap" price, please.
Thanks to both of you
Still not entirely sure what we're planning on doing once we leave Rio... well okay, we haven't made any plans yet really. I did read somewhere thought that you can get some decent short tours into the rain forest from Manaus, does that sound right?
Going to order Lonely Planet book(s) soon... maybe when I've had a bit of a read I'll have a better idea of what to do!!
So I see you like the nature of this country?
Than, there are better possiblities.
Go (by bus: 24 hours or by plane) to Campo Grande and visit the Southern Pantanal. There you will see wild animals and birds.
Around Manaus, you will not see animals nor birds. The excursions in the rain forest there are very expensive.
I cann give you names and adresses in the Pantanal "low budget".
I am not connected to any tourist agency or organisator. I know very well this region because I made already more than 20 trips there.
So, I think it would be good to decide what you intend to visit in Brazil and than we cann give you the right information.
