hi - my friend and i are heading to belize and honduras in about 10 days from mexico... just wanted to know what people thought the highlights were, especially the ones that are not so obvious??
we dont have huge amounts of money so if anyone could also suggest cheap, fun places to stay/eat/drink that would be great!
I havn't been to Honduras, but I was in Belize in mars, and I loved it! So here's a few tips. This is what you'll hear from a lot of people so I guess it might be kind of obvious, but Caye Caulker in Belize is a must do! It's heaven on earth. You can go from Belize City by water taxi. You don't have to book in advance, there are cheaper as well as more expensive lodging, but daytrips costs a little ofcourse. Great snorkeling with Ragamuffin tours.
For inland activities I highly recommend San Ignacio where you can choose from all types of activities in a wide variety of prices. It's not very expensive to travel around with bus and the travels are not very long since it's such a small country.
A place I was a bit dissapointed with was Placencia. There was a lot of tourists (mostly american) and not that much to do, if you don't have a big wallet..
Have a wonderful time and feel free to ask if there's anything else you want to know!
I was in Honduras at the Bay Islands back in January. An excellent place to go if you want to do some swimming, eat some seafood and do some diving. More expensive than mainland Honduras or other countries in Central America, but still reasonable.
My advice on Roatan (the island I was on) and specifically West End, can be found in my blog here: Roatan, Honduras.
We've been to Belize 3 times. We especially enjoyed Caye Caulker. Staying near San Ignacio was fun and allowed us to go to Guatemala to see the ruins at tikal. We have many pictures and trip reports from these trips on our family website. It isn't commercial and will let you see what part of the country looks like.

I have been in Belize and Honduras.
Belize is an awesome place to go, I is for sure more expensive than Honduras.
The Blue Hole is a good trip, expensive though.
Xunantunich, mayan ruins are a must, it's between Belmopan and the border with Guatemala...very nice.
Belmopan itself there is not much...it's tiny...but anyway...wanna see something quite different,....ask for Spanish Lookout...it's a Amish Settlement about 15 minutes from Belmopan.
In Honduras, you can take cheap buses or cabs,...the best there...go to COPAN, it's the Ancient Greece for Pre-Hispanic America...gorgeous. About 3 hours away from San Pedro Sula, like 7 bucks the road trip...
