My best reccomendation(I can't spell) is for you to go to your local sporting goods store and try a few packs on, because of your small frame some of the packs really aren't going to be comfortable for you to wear, I can tell you that most models of packs come in a "men's" build and a woman's build. I think you should really focus on the women's packs.

Where in the states do you live? I know a couple of really good stores to suggest in NY and NJ, or on the West Coast. If you have an REI where you live go there and get one of their pack sales people to help you out and make a reccomendation. Skip normal sporting good stores because their packs will usually be lower quality and have less of a selection. Look for "camping goods stores as opposed to sporting goods stores, you will want a place with a wide variety of packs and sales staff that focuses on them to help you make sure to get one that will fit you properly.

I'm small too and one thing I learned... have a good backpack. A sporting goods store will definitly be able to help you. You'll want an internal fram backpack to support you. They run anywere from $125 to $400. Also get locks for your pack.

If you want more help I created a public folder that I like to share. It has tips on places to stay and NOT to stay, things to do. Just stuff for people who don't know what they are doing (:
There's also pics I posted and pdfs.

and most importantly have fun (:
