hey i was just wondering if anyone had used the train in australia. in my lonely planet guide book it says that there is a 6 month pass that gives you unlimited travel for 590.00 that seems pretty cheap to me, almost too good to be true.
anyway i was just wondering why nobody seems to like taking the train? has anyone used this pass and what did you think of it?
also are there any other better alternatives that i should check out?
any replies would be much appreciated!
thanks
Nadia

Twice.

I've done Melbourne-sydney and Sydney-Canberra by train.

The train system in Oz is a good one, but most people fly becuase it is about the same price and gets you there in much quicker time.

However the train is a way to see more of the country. The trains in Oz are comfortable and you can get a bed if you pay a little extra. The great sothern Railway pass is good value, but you may want to look at passes for Countrylink NSW and Queensland rail as well. I'm not sure the southern railways pass incorporates NSW and Queensland railways into their pass.
