For get public payphones. I bought a sim card in Thailand last year for about £7 for the same reason...keep the missus happy ;)
The calls are very cheap! And so are the texts!

It feels weird sitting on the beach in the middle of the day having a conversation with someone back in the UK....

I'm pretty sure your phone will work too

They're not quite £1, but no where near as cheap as buying a sim. Its crazy how cheap international calls from Thai mobiles are in comparison to what we pay in the UK....the Brits just get ripped off....

You may look into using the internet as well, most cafes have webcams and microphones. That would probably be the cheapest way.

Definitely buy your sim card there, they are everywhere. A tip: have the person you are buying it from call and set it up for you. If you try to do it (unless you speak thai), you aren't going to have any clue what the operator is saying.

Lastly, I'm not sure how this affects UK cell phones, but I know cell phones in the US are locked - which means they are unable to be used in other countries - that is, unless you call your company and ask them to unlock your phone.

That's a good idea, but I wouldn't worry too much. The sim I bought came with full instructions in English, and even when you top-up you can get and english voice at the other end.....happy days
