Hello. I need to travel from Brusssels to Amman overland or by boat. I cannot pass through Syria. Please can anyone advise an alternative route however long? (All the ferries that had been advised to me eg Italy/Cyprus/Greece-Egypt etc seem to presently be suspended) Thankyou for your help.

If you are a man or a women with a man and travelling in a car, you could go Turkey-Iran-UAE-Saudi Arabia-Jordan.

You'll need a transit visa for Iran and then Saudi Arabia. Be aware that getting a visa for SA is like winning the lottery. They'll only grant it if you need to drive your own car through the country for some reason or the other.

But if the reason you cannot go through Syria is because you have US-citizenship, you are screwed on that route too.

Alternatively you could try to contact people who have their own private boats. There are for sure some people in Greece or Turkey who will sail to Israel or Egypt this year.

Yachting clubs in harbours are a good start.

I just remembered something else: there are shipment companies that offer passage on some of their freighters and specialised travel agencies that can book them for you.

It is very expensive, though.

Best start writing to/calling all cargo shipment companies that have regular line ship service from Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, East London, Bristol, Antwerpen, ....

This way you'll find a ship that goes to Egypt or Israel (and not Cape Town!) and you'll cut out that travel agency fee.

Thanks a lot for your advice. I did check out with some container companies. Unfortunately all the firms I spoke with said the Egyptian authorities won't let passengers disembark from cargo ships in the Egyptian ports. But I can get a cargo ship to Israel. Very expensive as you mention but might be the best option if I can't find a private boat heading there (travelling alone so not the car option). All the best.
