supernova has indicated that this thread is about Hungary

While travelling around Europe this summer, I have a choice in Hungary. We're going to Budapest, but we have to choose between either going to:

a) Lake Balaton
b) The Danube Bend

Which do you recommend, and why?

Thanks! :-)

Hi Supernova,

It depends...

If You've got only a day or two to spare, than your target should be the Danube bend: easy access from Budapest (about an hour by bus or train or 4 hours by boat...), rich cultural heritage (medieval castle ruins in Visegrád, art-village and open-air skanzen of Szentendre, and the some really picturesque spot)

On the other hand, Hungarians' number one summer resort, lake Balaton is more a place for sunbathing, swimming and relaxing. Trains take You there in 3 to 4 hours from Budapest. The northern shore has the better beaches and the most of the sight (Tihany peninsula ahould be considered as a must, and then Badacsony and Balatonfüred). If You are into local traditions and folklore, You should drive yourself into the Transdanubian "mountains", only a few kilometer from the lake, but a totally different atmosphere.

What is common is that both of the areas are full of tourists (both foreign and domestic) being no.2 and no.3 target for visitors.

Thanks everyone.

I think we're going to do the Danube Bend, because we're doing the 'beach/resort' thing when we're on Krk earlier in our travels.

Thanks again! :-)
