Ok so ive got this plan.......basically I want to go to japan in January for around 8 weeks in then on to Australia for a year on a working visa but Ive no idea what im going to be looking at cost wise. Ive got a friend that is going to be in Japan working with Nova so I have a place to stay for free there but i obviously want to travel around and see as much as is possible, urban and rural. im also gonna need to have money for when I arrive in Australia. Has anyone done this or does anyone know what i will be looking at money wise? Im currently working in Seattle and will either be flying from here or Vancouver....any tips on some good places for flights? Any advice would be really appreciated. Cheers!
Hi, in terms of travelling in Japan, it can be quite an expensive thing, but you should be able to buy a japan rail pass, which lets u use all the trains and stuff, inc the bullet train (shinkansen). A relaly good website for travel in Japan is http://www.hyperdia.com/
This will give u detailed train times and also the cost of journeys, so you can work out if it is cheaper to buy a japan rail pass or just buy tickets as you go.
Is also quite useful - about the highway buses.
Seeing Japan will be fairly easy as the transport links here, are, in my opinion some of the best in the world. Have a phrase book and everything will be fine.
In terms of flying on from japan, you will find cheaper fares whilst over here. Trying to find a flight from Japan to somewhere else whilst not actually in Japan can be very time consuming and frustrating thing. If possible, get ur friend to go into a travel agent over here and ask them for fare details.
Cant help with Oz im afraid, but am living in japan for the moment, so if u have any questions just holler.
You are lucky to be an outsider because you will be able to buy a rail pass before you come. Something around $200 US for a week of travel on any JR (buses and local trains) or Shinkansen (bullet train). This is quite a savings.
As for a flight out of japan try HIS No. 1 Travel( email: his304a@ adh.his.ne.jp) or IACE Travel (firstname.lastname@example.org) which are two japanese companies.
As for other stuff in Japan, this country is very expensive. Expect to pay around $30 for accomodation while you are here. But sounds like you are lucky enough to have a friend to stay with.
