I don't recall the last time I needed a winter jacket in March. But rain often is an issue.

As to clubbing laws; Amsterdam's recently drawn up a set of strict anti-discrimination rules for doormen to adhere to. They should be posted at every entrance in English and Dutch; minimum age is 18 everywhere, although there are clubs with young and less young audiences.

As I have grown up there have been stories about Amsterdam. Please clarify which of these are true and which are not. 1.It is a legal occupaton to be a bum. 2.Addicts can go to a clinic and are given their vice in order to limit drug related crime. 3.You can only buy round trip tickets to A'dam. I already read the threads so I know about the possesion laws. My wife and I hope to visit soon and we hope to have a good time in your city. I don't plan on becoming a bum or asking for free drugs, I just want to prove my friends wrong. One of them has a dream about doing those things and we think he is stupid. Also, we would like to know what the common spoken language is. We can tell from all the media we read. I assume if we speak English we will be fine. I hope it's as beautiful as my dreams there.

1. true, (well kind of ...in theory these people rent rooms to hookers)
2. true, at least for some projects, most will receive a substitute (methadon)
3. not true
language:. The common spoken language would be Dutch, but English is fine (as it is in the rest of the Netherlands)
dreams: I don't know your dreams, but it's not likely.

Hello Forum, I am debating on whether or not to go to Amsterdam and for how long.
I have already read the posts on Drugs laws, and am planning on getting the best experience from the city as I can, that includes sex drugs and drinking but is not my main focus.
My questions though, are: I heard a Rumour that Walking out of a Coffeeshop with product is illegal and can get you shot.
I alos heard that you must smoke it in the coffeeshop, as cops will watch you smoke it to make sure you do it in there.
How much would a personal amount cost me? and how much in relation to the US Dollar?
Where are some beautiful places in Amsterdam?
Whats the best kind of food served there?
and How bad is crime?
Is the cost of living Low or High?
Sorry for my Battery of Questions but I am planning on moving to Amsterdam, Permanently, if the conditions are right.

man i dunno where some ppl get their ideas about amsterdam from....... this is not a gang war city full of dealers and junkies weilding pistols.

you will NOT get shot for walking out of a coffeeshop with too much weed. if you happen to walk out of a coffeeshop with too much weed and you DO get shot, its just not ur lucky day. cops dont sit outside coffeeshops and watch the brits (sorry to generalise but its mostly them..) get stoned, eat some pizza and fall asleep in their hostel bed. they dont care really... they turn a blind eye to ppl smoking on the street as longa s youre not doing anything stupid. a baggie will cost you between €15-25 depending on what u get and where..

crime is not better or worse than any other big city, ive lived here for a 1,5 years and the only crime ive experienced is getting my bike stolen, but thats just how you get inducted into the "i lived in amsterdam" club. dont be stupid with ur things and youll be fine.

cost of living in amsterdam is ridiculous, housing is impossible to find, its overpriced and its crowded. if you want to live in the asmterdam kinda environment id recommend utrecht, its "little amsterdam". cheaper, easier to find a place to live.... den haag (the hague) is also pretty nice.

the red lite district will cost you about €50 for 15mins (so ive heard), watch out for the women in the windows with the red lights on the outside and BLUE lights on the inside - its a man - no matter how pretty she looks.

you can get all kinds of american snack foods, kebabs, theres BK and maccas everywhere. FEBO serves dutch snacks out of the wall - try a kroket, better if theyre fresh from a snackbar tho. on the leidseplein you can get any kinda food you want - its more expensive tho cos thats where all the tourists are. AVOID the Damrak at all costs, its REALLY overpriced and NO dutch ppl. you can find some nice places on the rembrandtplein and the nieuwmarkt. depends how much you wanna spend and what you like but i havent had a bad meal yet....just overpriced ones.

i dont know if youre american or british, but im assuming that youre american because of you asking for prices compared to the USD. good luck getting a job here... the companies who hire someone whos not from the EU have to prove that the position youre taking has been advertised for a minimum of 4-6 weeks and that they couldnt find anyone else to fill the job whos either dutch or from the EU. its really hard to find work here, and i wouldnt try being here illegally either because youll find next to no work and after your 90 day schengen visa is up you cant fly anywhere...

thumbs up and good luck to you!

About the employment situation;
I understand about the things you stated, but what about relocating a business there? I own a cabinet shop, and would like to run it in Amsterdam, or near there in a friendly environment to raise 3 girls in. I was under the impression that the port authority is willing to help this happen. When I approached them about it, I got no response. I have lines of products that I ship, and I also do a large amount of high end custom cabinetry. I do entertainment centers too, and even indoor gardens (for vegetables, not weed). I suppose over there I might be able to market them as weed closets. Anyway, do you thinnk there is much chance of me moving my business, and family there?

Tokes: if you want to establish your business and your residency in the Netherlands, you need to get in touch with the Immigration and Naturalisation Service. If you just want to conduct business in the Netherlands, Customs will be able to answer your questions.

Kid: legal drinking age is 16
