We are planning a first trip to south America and here is our initial plan on what to do, If anyone has any comments etc. on this let us know!!!
Start Lima Peru, Do a small overland trip which includes the Inca Trail and Macchu Picchu and ends up in la Paz.
Then, we want to head south to Santiago, Across to Beunos Aires and then up to finish in Rio.
Does this sounds reasonable? This has only been planned in our heads at the moment, we haven't gone into any details and we just want to get an idea of if this is reasonable, Especially as we can't really spend any more than 3 months out there.
Any hints and tips would be much appreciated,
Sounds reasonable for 3 months. That'll give you about 3 weeks in each country or so. Buses are pretty good in South America in general, though things I've heard are rough between Lima and Cusco (start of the Inca Trail), and Bolivia always has the potential issue of road blockades, though with the new president things seem to have quieted down recently.
Defenitely reasonable. Try to go through Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia) into Chile, it's a very popular route through the salt plains (one of the coolest places I've been to). That way you get to see San Pedro de Atacama too. The rest of northern Chile isn't very interesting though. How far south are you planning to go, down to Patagonia or just into Mendoza from Santiago?
reasonable, and a good itinerary as well. Plan for a few additional stops, you'll probably have time for that. Consider the seasons, though; arriving in Santiago/BsAs in october/november would be ideal.
I did more or less the same route once, would be happy to email you the plan if I can still find it. Drop me a line; also if you want more info on Buenos Aires.
Thanks for the responses, The trip is in the very early stages of planning, i am just trying to get an idea of best routes to take etc. so we can get the most out of it, All the help is much appreciated!
Take it easy,
