i'm a huge fan of skylines, and an even bigger fan of travelling. i haven't travelled much yet, so the only skylines i have so far are Copenhagen (taken from the Round Tower) and London (taken from St. Pauls Cathedral).
anyone have any suggestions? cities with great skylines, or, even better, any suggestions of places i can get to the top of to take skyline photos?
From Victoria Peak, there are some AMAZING shots one can get to the Hong Kong skyline. When I was there, there were many, many photographers up at the top, waiting for the sun to set (very great night pictures).
Cities on water provide some great photography shots. Chicago from Lake Michigan or Toronto from Lake Ontario can provide some dramatic shots, as the skyscrapers are close to the lake, so there is little blocking you and the skyline shots.
I imagine New York from the East River would be good, too, but haven't seen it yet. I've been up the Empire State Building, which is okay, but pretty far from the big towers. I've heard the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center is a better place for pictures.
I came across this site a while ago and it might be of interest to you:
I'm sure it misses many other great skylines (I may be biased, but Vancouver springs to mind), but I hope it helps.
Auckland has got a great one. The City Tower is good place to see it from, or from below from the harbour.
Rio de Janeiro is good too. Sugar loaf or the hill with the Christ statue are good for pictures.
Try Buenos Aires, from the big hotel (Continental?) on 9 de Julio. If that's too far away, Amsterdam from the Rembrandt tower is nice, too.
auckland had a nice skyline from the gulf.
ill let u know when i get back of some more places
Johannesburg from roads/shopping centres/any high point in the east of the city: the sun sets behind the distinct high rises of SA's capital (including the tallest building in Africa). African sunsets are always very photogenic: warm orange light which spreads through the whole sky and lights clouds and a fire red sun. I'm not saying that those conditions don't occur anywhere else, but here you're almost guaranteed, especially during winter.
Hong Kong from the Peak,
Sydney from the Sydney Tower restaurant
New York has gotta be a good one, and Chicargo
Toronto from across the water on Toronto Island is prefect spot. Take the ferry ($6/5min) to Hanlain's point and just turn around and look. Right at the ferry dock's is the entire Toronto skyline laid out for you. I did this lastnight.
From my gallery:
London and Hong Kong are really good as well.
