Hi everyone,

My name is Kim and yesterday I took the plunge and booked my ticket to Australia! It's something that I've been thinking about for a while now and after being told that I might not graduate this year because of the stupid lecturers strike I snapped and decided that I needed something to look forward to. I fly into Melbourne on 7 Jan next year!! I was wondering if people could let me know the best places to stay in Melbourne. I'm on a budget and want to stay for roughly 2-3 months. I'll then be moving to Sydney. I plan to see the East Coast up to Cairns before going to Alice Springs, Broome and then down to Perth. Any info on any of the places along my route would be fantastic! ;)

If you don't plan on getting a flat, the I would recommend "Bev and Mick's Hostel", in South Melbourne (they have a few, i'd recommend the one in south melbourne). I stayed there for a month and a half and loved it. First of all, it's really cheap, only $90 a week for a decent dorm room and it's always kept nice and clean. Plus it has an amazing atmosphere, most people are there long term so you can really get to know people and just hang out. I was there during christmas and new years and we all had a blast. The owners are really great and they actually make you feel welcome (they remember everyone's name too). It does have a bar attached, with some cheap prices and fun times, but it's not what I would consider a party hostel where you need to get drunk all the time.

Also, the location is perfect. It's walking distance from the city and St Kilda, or you could take a tram if you are feeling lazy. There's also the south melbourne market right in front. This is a great local market (not for tourists) where you can get really cheap and good food to make in the kitchen. There's also a 24 hour supermarket right around the corner.

Anyways, PM me if you're interested and I can give you the phone number.
