I'm going to NZ for the first time in january and february for five weeks. I'm travelling with my boyfriend, our son (2 years), and a couple of friends and their two daughters at 3 and 6. We're planning on getting a camper van - where's the best (and cheapest) place? And which hotels are good in Auckland and Christchurch? And do you have any general good tips? THANKS!!!
My wife and I did this with our 3 year old a few years back in winter for 10 days on the South Island only. We got a package deal that included airfares (Sydney <-> Christchurch) and a Maui campervan for a week or so at a pretty good price.
There are heaps of van hire places. We were really happy with the van - spacious, toilet, shower, fridge, it went well, had a bench seat in the front seating 3 people which was good. Expect to spend a fair amount on fuel because its not cheap and you'll do a few kilometres.
Like most car hire places - it'll save you a few $$ to fill it up before you return it - otherwise you'll get charged premium rate to do so.
There are heaps of van parks to stay in and the facilities are generally pretty well kept, complete with swings and play areas for the kids.
You'll love it.
Not a lot more that I can add to the above post, but give yourself plenty of time for travelling, many places are hours apart.
