Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean NOT recomended - bad tour operators etc.

Have you been travelling South America and come across a hostel or a tour operator with really bad service, so bad that you want to tell fellow travellers to stay away from it?

I've got one: Nieve Selva (means "jungle snow") in Latacunga (they also operate in Baños) arranges climbs up to Cotopaxi. They were extremly arrogant and we didn't get what we where told. We wanted to do a three day tour (instead of the usual two day tour), and they promised us a hike up to another volcano the first day. However, the guide was late so we didn't have enough time, and we ended up hanging out at a refugio in the valley most of the day. Then, during the actual climb, I got really sick from the altitude. We wanted to turn back down but the guide wouldn't let us, probably because he wouldn't have been paid as much if we turned back earlier.
Also, they put our shoes in the wrong jeep, so that we had to wait three hours in Latacunga and missed our bus to Baños... And they didn't compensate us at all!!!

So... don't go with them. Any other "reverse recomendations"?

Although ALL companies are likely to have at least some dissatisfied clients, I have another one:

In Uyuni (Bolivia), DON't do the salar trekking with the company opposite to the train station (I don't know the name, but it's only one that's located there). I paid, after which they cancelled the whole trip, and tried to get me on a much shorter one organised by another company. It took a lot of threatening (my spanish fortunately sufficed to do the trick) to get my money back.

So, do business with some of the companies around the little central square instead.

I'm surprised that nobody else responded to this thread! There must be someone who went with a tour operator and thought like I did: "I have to tell everyone how bad they were!".

Maybe I should start the thread in General Talk instead... :(

you could ask one of the moderators to move it... but maybe people just don't feel like contributing to such a negative thread :-P

Please people, contribute to the negativity. The last thing i want to do is get to South America and have part of my trip ruined because of a bad tour operator.
