With a slim margin of victory, the residents of Montenegro have voted to become an independent country, spliting from Serbia-Montenegro.

Under their union's founding charter, Serbia will become the successor state, and Montenegro will have to apply for membership of the EU, United Nations and other international institutions.

Serbia will also lose direct access to the Adriatic Sea, and granting special rights of access will give Montenegro a strong position in forthcoming talks on dividing the union's assets, our correspondent says.

Montenegro's loose union with Serbia was established in 2003, replacing what was left of the former Yugoslavia.

Both sides were given the option of electing to leave the union after three years.

The last time Montenegro was independent was nearly 90 years ago at the end of World War I, when it was absorbed into the newly formed Yugoslavia.

Seeing as I imagine there are very few of us posting here that were travelling back 90 years ago, I'm guessing there has been no one on this board who has ever been to the area while it was an independent country.

Who'll be the first person on this board to go there, and get a MONTENEGRO stamp in their passport? Any guesses?

Gelli - if he can pull himself away from SE Asia and he doesn't have to take a plane... Ohterwise - is this a hint and you have your tickets already??

No, I don't have tickets yet.

By the way, you guessed what my guess would have been.

Hmm should we have a race?

Hold on to your wallets - the opposition are demanding a recount!

Yes, it doesn't count until (should I say if) Montenegro becomes it's own country after all the recounts and negotiations and such, and stamps the passport with a Montenegro stamp.

Actually, chances are i'd loose on a technicality. I have a feeling that they may not actually stamp my passport anyway (for example, i?ve never managed to get the Bosnians to stamp me). So look out for a non Western European winner, although I may well get there first as I have some business in Bar and go there quite a bit anyway...

So, turns out that Isa guess was probably right. In thread Some country stats, Gelli writes...

Quoting Gelli

There are only several countries which were not visited:
Christmas Island, Cocos Islands, Norther Mariana Islands, Pitcairn, Wallis and Futuna, Montenegro, Svalbard, Ascension Island, Comoros, Mayotte, St Helena, Tristan da Cunha, Eritrea and Sao Tome and Principe.

At your service. Was in Montenegro a few days ago (and had been several times before in alternate names) and a few of the others will be ticked off before the end of the year. And I am going solely for the good of TP, you understand.

Congradulations sir!

Wow!!! I'm rarely (probably) right on anything!!!

Sorry Greg - I forgot all about this thread, even after reading Gelli's reply in System Talk. But, I put my (monopoly) money on the cartographer and it might have paid off!
