Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean La Paz to Cusco - HELP???

Hi everyone!

I wanted to know what the cheapest and/or fastest way to get from La Paz to Cuzco. How many hours is the trip???

I'm studying in Cuzco this summer and afterwards I'm planning on visiting La Paza. I have already booked a roundtrip flight from Lima to Cuzco and back. I start my trip in Lima then on to Cuzco...stay in Cuzco for a month...then take buses to La Paz on Aug 5. Since I had already booked a return flight from Cuzco back to Lima on Aug 13 (bc I had not originaly intended on trecking to La Paz) I need to get back from La Paz to Cuzco to catch that flight and get back to Lima. BUT, I don't have a flight booked from La Paz to Cuzco. I've been searching online for flights from La Paz directly to Lima but they are a bit pricey. So I think my alternative is to take a bus or train back from La Paz to Cuzco.
How much would it be if I were to book a flight @ the airport in La Paz??

Could anyone PLEASE help me with this? I would highly appreciate it! Thanks!

please stop using boldface.

And stop doing everything by plane, too. It's called irresponsible travel, and ground transportation is sooo much nicer... there's excellent bus connections between cuzco and la paz; you may need to change at the border (copacabana), but I guess there's direct service, too.

take care,
Niels (Amsterdam)

I recommend what our nice Dutch friend just posted. I did a one way trip from Cusco to Laz Paz via BUS and it cost roughly 60 soles which is roughly $20 USD.

From Cusco.. I would take an overnight bus to Puno. Takes about 8 hrs, but they play a cheezy movie and u can sleep on the bus. Get the seats w the beds. I think its 5 sole more.

There.. U can get into Puno and do a tour of Lake Titicaca of the Peruvian Side. Spend the night.. and the next day.. take a bus to Copacabana.. Which is the Bolivian side of the Lake. Takes about 3 hrs.

From there.. do a tour, or spend the night on Isle de Sol.

From Copacabana, take a bus to La Paz. Takes about 4 hrs.

Just make sure you take a bus from a certified bus, etc. Alot scams where you take a shit bus and they rob you blind. Just be smart. Just follow certain travel precautions.

Great, thanks SO much for your help..the both of you!!

So I would just take the same buses and routes back to Cusco after I get to La Paz then??

you could, but not necessarily; if you like to see some of Peru, you could try to make it back to Cuzco via Arequipa, but I'm not 100% sure whether there's bus service from Copacabana to Arequipa. It's nice, though!

It depends what you like. I flew LanPeru from Lima to Cusco because of time constraints. It took an hour, and it was smooth as silk. You have to figure, your in the Andes mountains and to get most places it takes awhile on the ground. You have to meander around and through the mountain areas which don't get me wrong are gorgeous, but it will take awhile also. I had 5 days to see La Paz, Cusco, and Machu Pichu, so we flew.

Flying in country via plane irresponsible?!? Man that's a pretty lame statement. Some people only have a week to see the world once a year. I got kids, I can't be backpacking for weeks through a country. Doing that in my opinion is irresponsible if you have young ones waiting for you at home. And I am not going to waste time sitting on a bus for countless hours when I can be flying all over seeing multiple places. If I was 21, I would think different.
