Hello,

I'm planning an 8 month world journey & need a decent torch for camping, venturing into caves etc...
Anybody recommend any light weight ones where the battery won't run down 2 minutes into a dark cave? Don't want to get lost

Thanks Kel

If you are planning on doing a lot of spelunking then I would recomend that you get a light that converts from flashlight to lantern.. Coleman makes one like that, but I don't know the model name of it. I have seen several other companies market them too, but I have used Coleman gear a lot growing up and trust their name a lot. You should definitely consider carrying a second smaller light too, just in case.
Mag Lite makes a very nice one that fits on your belt and creates a very nice amount of light for being so small, enough to get yourself out of a cave if your main light dies for sure.

I've got a tiny maglite on my keyring, which is pretty handy for some things - I wouldn't trust it in a cave though Maybe one of their larger ones would be more suited for your purposes. I'm not a big camper though, so I'm sure there are more qualified opinions out there

Cheers, Peter

Maglite all the way! I had a mini one (about 8inches) that i borrowed (stole) from my younger brother at the last minute before i went to Ghana and it was invaluable in power cuts and going anywhere at night in town or country. It saved me from broken and twisted ankles on dodgy tracks numerous times and stopped me from walking into the path of an extremely large black mamba one night which instead killed various chickens and my neighbour's goat. No lie.
It was also extremely hardy as i have to admit i did not take the best care of my brother's possessions and regularly dropped it, squashed it in the bottom of my pack and generally mistreated it. Despite being extremely scratched and not having a lens cover by the time i'd finished with it the bulb never smashed and i only changed the batteries once!
So my advice is go with a maglite as if i couldn't break it then it should last you forever!

Well, there is something to be said for a lighter and a gas bottle ;)
