Im thinking of going to india in december and wondering how safe it is for a female to travel there by herself. what areas should be avoided...and is it safe to stay in budget accommodation or are hotels a better option? Any advice??

Just got back from India and I met loads of girls travelling alone.
Budget accomodation can be dangerous but so can hotels, just stay where you feel safe and if it is a cheap place make sure their are plenty of other guests around.

south india is lovely; dont miss kerala, pondicherry, coorg.
And south indians are quiet friendly and approachable as compared to the aggressive north indians.. am sure you will have a wonderful time..enjoy!

Like in any other country, India is safe or unsafe all depends on where you stay and the precautions you take.As long as you take normal precautions, you will be ok. Also as long as you dress modestly, you will be ok.
In some cities budget accommodation not preferable.Suggest you to read some guide books.

If you tell me the places of visit, may be i can suggest you some good places.

have a nice trip to India.

I feel you will be more safe in India then in most European countries. I have stayed almost 10 months in India and never encountered any pickpocketing or any crime whatsoever. Where ever you are, you should always beware of it though. I have seen a lot of women travelling alone. Probably you should avoid walking alone in the dark at the late hours (but why should you).

I have been to a few of the cities, and although I am not a female, I would consider Varanasi a place best to avoid for safety reasons, and well Agrs has got to be seen for the Taj Mahal but be careful as a lot of Indian guys I talked to there couldn't stop talking about sexually explicit topics. Just incase some Indians in Agra and Varanasi are reading this and goign to have a go at me, I am not saying that all of you men are sleeze bags, but just a lot of them. Varanasi also has a lot of crime, scams, con artists and guys approaching you trying to sell drugs to you more frequently than I was approached in Amsterdam.

Wouterrr, you deserve a medal and trophy with all honesty for surviving 10 months in India. I have aged about 20 years, ripped hundreds of hairs out and for the first time in all 33 countries, I have been to I have even had to bring forward my departure day to get out of this country sooner before I totally lose it with one of the harrassing men. They don't know the meaning of no, don't know the meaning of honest, honesty, truth or fact. They sure know how to say honest, but then shortly after it's oh I've got a favour to ask you, can you pay 100r for this thing, or a taxi ride from the airport 350r prepaid, then you get to the destination and oh it'll be another 150 rupees because it's been a long way. I don't give a toss if it is a long way or not. Hearing the words "Hello my friend" every bloody five metres you walk is getting so annoying, clearly they believe any white person is a friend because they believe they have pockets lined with $100US notes. If you bloody want an auto-rickshaw, to go to a silk shop or any other of these stupid things you ask about with being bombarded with total crap from them. Man you do deserve to be congratulated for not slitting your wrist or being in prison for causing some serious harm to a auto-rickshaw driver that won't take no for an answer. When they ask where are you going? Even saying to the North Pole, can you take me there? that doesn't get them to get it through their thick skulls to piss off.
