Don't know if you really need to stay in a hostel in Hanoi. I was there over Christmas a couple of years ago and all the small hotels are cheap and better then a backpackers - i had a three bed room with two of my friends and it was US$3 per night including breakfast right in the middle of the old district. I dont know of any hostels/hotels that have airport transfer unless you go for a big hotel but it was only US$10 for a taxi to the airport.
Hope this helps.

Unlike any other countries, most hostels in Vietnam don't offer the Airport pick-up service. But when you are at the gate of Noibai airport, there are a host of taxi driver ready to call and ask you to take their taxi. The cost is about 10 to 15 $.
or more cheaply, the local bus number seven can take you right to the centre of the city (not the old district) at a surprising low cost: 5000 VND (33 US cent).

Hostels are available in the old district. You can try any of them at a low cost and also experience life there.
Have a good time!

hi,

in vietnam there's no need to stay in hostels as the minihotels are very cheap. at least three years ago we stayed there for 3 months and stayed in nice and clean hotels for 3-5 usd/person/night in a double. so... there are a lot of minihotels in old quarter. sport hotel has nice and quiet air-con rooms right in the centre of the old quarter for 10- 12 usd but there are many others too. we also stayed in very nice hotel along hang hom street but just can't remember its name. but just take a taxi to hang bac and start searching :)

Vietnam airlines do a mini bus from Hanoi Airport to the old quarter, it cost us $3. If there are a few of you, it wouldn't cost much more to get a taxi.

As for hotels, there are many mini hotels in the old quarter of a very decent standard, if they're not full you can even barter for the price of your room. Some will include a basic breakfast and even internet use.

I'm arriving in Hanoi quite late in the evening; would be a better idea to book wouldn't it? Any names?

Hi, If you arrive in Hanoi late in the evening, you should book your room before. You can email to some hotel for booking and ask them to arrange you the airport pick up. It's easy and they will help you.
I have a friend in Cat Tuong Hotel, named Huy. Write him in bigben_travel@yahoo.com. He will help. He owns a mini hotel, price is 6 - 10 USD/ night. It's quite good for backpackers who want a clean and basic place for sleeping. I haven't heard any complain about this hotel from tourist and online. You can find a post about this hotel on Tripadvisor.com, As I remember. Maybe by googling it, you an find that post.
If you want more bigger, more beautiful and of course higher rate, can try Dong A hotel (15 - 20 USd) or Viet Anh hotel (20 - 45 USD) in Ma May street.
- Dong A Hotel: 50 Ma May - Email:hanoidongahotel@yahoo.com
- Viet Anh hotel: 11 Ma May - Email: vietanhhotel@hn.vnn.vn

Good luck.
