Avoid Kuta unless you like pollution and constant hassle. Ubud is quiet-and cool try Anom Cottages, Lombok is very chill try Quinci Villas if you want to splash out for a little luxury, Jimbaran has great seafood on the beach dinner but watch the shellfish!
Dont bring much everything is cheap but get a feel for prices before you jump into buying.
Bali is great value and has great people it`s one of my favs in Asia.

best places in Bali are, lovina beach (in the north) nice to snorkel and dive. Beautiful sunset and really relaxing. Ubud (central bali), good shopping, tempels, balinese dancing, monkey temple nearby and climbing Gunung Batur for sunrise. When it's clear, you can see lombok as well, take the hotsprings down the volcano, it is really relaxing after the 3 hours climb.

Don't bring to much, it is really cheap if you're good in haggling. A good item is a sarong. If you want to enter a temple it is obliged to wear one. It can also function as a small blanket or towel. Try local eatery at the market. It is the best place to tast real Indonesian food. Don't use ice cubs in your dinks (even if you buy the drinks at Mac Donalds and other known fast food joints) they use tapped water to make these cubs and you can get very sick.

it is good to know some indonesian words if you want to buy things. Due to my ofspring is Indonesian, it got me good bargains but I found out that my friend (australian) got great deals when she used some indonesian words. If you like PM me, for some further information

April is a good month to visit though it's a little hotter and drier. However, it's low season, so you get discounts especially on accommodation. There are also less tourists.

Ubud is a good place to unwind and just chill out a little, it tends to "go to sleep" extremely early though. Kuta doesn't reflect Bali at all but you cant say that u've been to Bali unless u've visited Kuta. Maybe 3 days is sufficient.

I personally liked the sunset at Uluwatu and I think it's simply amazing. Check out the Gitgit waterfall too.

Agree that Lovina Beach is Heaven. Would try to attend as many dance ceremonies as interest you. Even Kuta / Legian can be fun for a little while especially for the cheap massages by the beach ladies.
