We're trying to plan a volunteering trip for winter vacation (late December to early January), and are looking for good organizations that protect sea turtles (or with a distinctly marine angle). I've investigated some groups, but most shut down operations for the monsoon season. We're looking mostly for Malaysia, but other countries are options too.
Has anyone done this kind of volunteering in southeast Asia at this time of year? If so, where did you go, and what was the organization you helped out?
Any information regarding this type of travel would be greatly appreciated.
There's a popular turtle volunteer programme in Terengganu, Malaysia. If I'm not mistaken it's called "SEATRU" and they have a website where you can obtain more information.
Basically, December and January is not a good time to go to Terengganu because of the monsoon season and the SEATRU does not take any volunteers during that season. They open up place possibly from April - October but every one week places are limited to 6-8 volunteers. The programme last for a week or so.
Places do get fully booked easily 3 months in advance, so if you are in Malaysia during April - October, be sure to book well in advance.
