Hi i am travelling from Capetown to Johannesburg at the end of July to mid August. I am looking for the budget way and want to travel up the east coast then in to Jburg. What is the best way Bus or something. I will stay at hostels along the way. But just want opinions on what would be the best way to travel?
you can catch the Bazbus which is set up for backpackers and is a hop on hop off service stopping at hostels.there is a load of routes you can check on there web site...i stayed away from it when i was in S.A though and caught the Greyhound and Transcape coaches although they don't stop in the Transkei...if you want to go there you pretty much have to deal with the baz bus or drive.
Also i found flying cheap...i flew from Durban to Jo'Burg for 400 rand and only bought the ticket the day before...
Yes, you can try out Kulula or OneTime airlines for cheap rates, but you will have a much better experience by travelling up the coast. I'm not sure whether the BazBus goes to Johannesburg though. You have to try and max your stay in Cape Town, it's a beautiful city (I know, I live here!).
The Baz bus definitely stops in Joburg. (I know, I live there for a coupe of months).
But it is 'the backpackers highway'. If you like to meet a lot of other backpackers: take the baz. If you prefer to meet some locals, try the greyhound or intercape.
Though Cape Town is indeed beautiful, and the weather is better overthere, Joburg is worthwile visiting!
I live there from feb. till oct.
