I'll be arriving in Cairns with a friend in September. Due to our flights we won't be arriving until about 10:30 pm and we are thinking of pre-booking a hostel. I'm looking for some hostel suggestions for those of you who have been there. Also, how close to town is the airport? Should we be expecting a long drive after 2 long flights?
The airport is 10 minutes from the city. Hostels? Calypso is my pick followed by Nomads Serpent. I'd avoid the monstrosity of a nightclub/hostel in town called Gilligans.
We would recommend Nomads Serpents too thats where we stayed when we first landed.
Avoid Cairns Beach House - dirty, smelly and too far out of town Oh and also give Corona a miss (dirty condom and rubbish under our bed)
Hiya, just read this and I'm in exactly the same position as you, only I'm going on my own. Very scared, especially after long flights! I understand it is only 7 km from the airport to the town centre and I've done a lot of research into hostels. To be honest I've read so many good and bad reviews for every hostel in Cairns. Gilligans does seem to be the cleanest, best location and also gives you the opportunity to meet people, so I'll prob be going there from Sept 29th. I want to go out for the very relaxed cultural experience too so for 8 days of my travels I'm fully prepared to party a bit to take my mind off things and I'll make up for the cultural experience in other areas of the east coast. I think my 2nd choice would be Calypso's but I've been told although it is a nice hostel, taxi's will be needed a lot if you want to go into town so I suppose it depends on your budget. I've had so many people that have gone to Oz tell me Gilligan's is the best place to be, if it's not I'm going to kill them! I suppose it's one of the risks you have to take being in a foreign country on your own!
Hope this helps chick. Manda x
Gilligans is like a five star backpackers & has probably the biggest and most popular night club in town attached to it..its pretty close to everything aswell..as for serpents ive heard really good things about it but is a little further out of town (15 mins walk) but stil walking distance to everything you need...dont be worried travelling alone here either cos u will meet so many people doing the same thing and Cairns is a fairly small but fun and vibrant place so you wont feel lost like ur in a big city...Sept is a busy time here aswell so it wouldnt hurt to book ur room bfr arriving....
My boyfriend and I are in the same position as you - we're arriving in Cairns on the 25th Sept.
We are going to be staying at the Calypso for a few nights - am really looking forward to it!!
Maybe see you there!!
Definately Nomads Serpent Hostel. It was the first hostel I stayed in on my trip, and I'd say it was one of the very best. And I stayed in quite a few!
I stayed in Gilligans in Cairns and loved it!
The club is the best in town and you are close to everything. They also have a free shuttle bus that runs from the airport.
Id definatley reccommend it, its clean and modern and all the facilities are great!
Hope this helps, happy travelling!
