Renting accommodation in austrailia?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Renting accommodation in austrailia?

HI. I was planning on getting a working visa to let me stay and work in austrailia for a year. Im 28 now (29 in july) so im running out of time to do this.

I will be going alone so I was curious about the cost of apartment rental (saying I cant split the bill its a big thing for me) and the cheapest I can see is about $450 Aus dollars a week. Thats about £180 in my own currency which is pretty nuts.

Maybe its because its in the city or something, I dont know, my experience of such things is very limited.

So my question is for anyone that has been through this OR someone that lives in Austrailia and can give me some pointers on where to get cheaper, but decent, accommodation etc..

Id like to think that im not the only person that has done this on their own so there must be a way to get around it.

Anyway, thanks if you can help.

I don't know where you got the $ 450 rent a week from but that's definitely a rip-off. I have been living in Melbourne for the last 4 months and rent here is around AUS $100-$150 dollars a week sometimes even including bills! Also if you're looking into sharing a house/flat with someone it will be a lot cheaper. In the bigger cities uni notice boards are usually a good place to start looking for decent accomodation and I also found http://www.gumtree.com.au/ a helpful site. Good luck!

Hi ya..

The prices you are quoting seem extreme, and it would be true if you wanted to stay within the CBD or neighbouring areas. Im in Queensland at the moment and live fairly close to the city, rent is $200 a week.
Try this website for rental properties etc, ive used it and its insightful. http://www.homehound.com/consumer/home.do Dont worry too much about it, do abit of research in this site and give yourself peace of mind.
I definitely recommend renting a place of your own or maybe with afew flatmates.

All the best...and welcome to our shores :)

Thanks for the tips guys! Its becoming more clear to me now that doing this alone will not be easy at all. Although i'll have a working visa I dont really want to work the whole time im there!

First of all id like a month of sun and surf when I get there and then worry about a job after that.

You see, I have to leave enough money here at home to pay all the bills, mortgage etc.. All of that add's up to a fair bit of money and then theres around a grand for the flights.

It would make things MUCH easier if I had one or two more people to go with that I could trust. I had a chance to go a couple of years back but it fell apart, the chances of arranging something with friends now is zero I fear :(

$450 per week is too much. It must be a nice place.

Try www.domain.com.au and go to the rentals section.

www.easyroommate.com is a good site to check out apartments for rent or renting with someone else...etc.etc. It's def. worth a look around. I got an awesome place by bondi for 100 aus a week, its in a house with others but it's massive and seems to be a lot of fun!
