We stayed in Koln but only stayed one night. Dont cross the river and go to the YHA. It is really expensive and filled with school kids. We stayed at station hostel which is in a very handy location. It was adequate. Single beds (no bunks) are a bonus. Bit musty though.

Koln is pretty cool. Up the road from the hostel there are heaps of beer halls where you must sample the local speciality kolsch. Its really good! Climbing up the church tower is very rewarding! Its a slog but the views are worth it. I dont know if you would need three nights, not sure what else there is to do there, maybe two would be enough. Have fun! We are missing Germany!!!

thanks for that. thanks alot, im going to travel there on sunday and was just wondering about the hostel situation. i have a train pass that kicks in on the 7th and it will enable me to travel any bahn train without fare. so i was just looking for a decent town near frankfrut (because of the cost of fares) to wait those three days out, isnt there a few other towns near köln that would be worthwhile to see? can't wait till the 7th..frrreeedddoooomm.

If you are into Disneyland-style resort parks, you could go to Phantasialand nearby.

From Köln take tram Linie 18 to Bonn and get off „Brühl Mitte“. From there catch the Phantasialand Shuttle-Bus.

If you buy your ticket to the park at a VRS station, this will include free tram and bus travel.Price is 28 EUR for the day.
