I've got between 2 and four months (though I'll have to duck out to renew my visa a couple of times)and I really want to get a feel for the country. My plan right now is to head up the east coast from Hong Kong to Xiamen, to Shanhai and Suouzou (sp?) then head to Xian via Nanjing before hopping up via some smaller places to Bejing. From there I'm going to swing out to Mongolia for Naadam and then back into China. I'd like to see the northeast but really don't have a clue about that region before I head west.
My itinary is really hazy right now so any suggestions on great places/don't miss places will be very appreciated.

Hey mate, There are some great places all the way up the east that youll come across. Dont worry about leaving the country to renew your visa as its pretty easy to find someone in china, if you can do without your passport for a couple of days.
Im sure youve heard of yangshou down south if not head there its pretty popular, Lijiang and other cool places are further west but worth checking out. Datong and urumuqi are good in the north west.
