Going to Phuket for a few days and i'm wondering if I should go for a backpackers and book in advance, or wait till I get there and find some nice cheap bungalows. Ideally I want to pay around 150 Baht. Any suggestions for some cheap bungalows or backpackers?

...and should I book my internal flight from Bangkok before or when I get there?

if u decide to get a hostel you usally, unless theirs a big event, you do not need to book ahead and if you want to save some money take the bus or train down and a ferry over to the island

phuket is about the most expensive place in thailand mate. you wont get much in the way of accomodation for 150 bht. you would do ok in chiang mai on 150 bht. good luck.

Phuket town would be your best bet in finding accomadation for travellers, but be prepared to spend more. The islands in Thailand get a lot of package holiday tourists, so costs are a lot more.

Dana,
I think you are using an older book if you think 150bt rooms are still available on Phuket. There is not going to be much in the under 500bt range.

Why don't you try Krabi instead? It is prettier than Phuket (IMHO) and has cheaper rooms. The Railley Beach area off Krabi is not to be missed and still has some lower cost bungalows. Krabi area or Koh Phi Phi makes more sense than Phuket. My 2 cents.

Actually i'm quoting the Lonely Planet's Thailands Islands and Beaches printed march 2004... however i'm not surprised if it's off... the Japan guide is a complete waste of money as a lot of the information is wrong.

Cheers for the 2 cents, but i'm still staying in Phuket.

I agree with Vegasmike, costs in Phuket for accommodation have increased quite a bit over the last couple of years.

Maybe if you give people an idea of which beach you will be thinking of staying on they could give you an idea of current prices? I was in Phuket in February of this year and may be able to give you a better idea once I know where you plan to stay.
