Just a quick question ..... does anyone bother buying discount cards for anything before they leave the UK. For instance, I have seen on www.vipbackpackers.com that you can buy discount cards for bus companies/tours and activities etc.
Has anyone booked this kind of thing before going or is there no need?!
The VIP card is really useful in Aus and NZ, but you could buy it there. I can't particularly see the advantage in buying it beforehand, unless it saves you money somehow to do that. Maybe just so its one less thing to think about.
If you get it there (good hostel receptions will usually sell them) costs about Aus$32 and gets you at least $1 off per night at most hostels, and often pretty good discounts on attractions and tours etc. It doesn't take long before its paid for itself.
I have saved quite a bit with mine. I've got discounts on a trip Australia Zoo, Sydney Tower, museums and hostels. Its already paid for itself in a month.
i have joined YHA - for the first time at 37 years old and never visited a hostel - however it has paid for itself and more before leaving home. Colulmbus insurance, Blacks and Millets give 10% off - paid for itself when i bought a rucksack.
Also applicable for buses (concession on greyhound) etc in Aus and NZ, as well as money off hostels (yha and some independents).
Yeah i would suggest get a VIP card but don't worry about doing it before you go. I got a YHA card which was fairly useless as we never really liked the hostels. VIP hostels are really good and you'll probably find that you'll stay in one most places you head to.
