Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has been and impressions of the place. Trying to decide whether to make space for a 4 day visit in my travelling schedule at the end of my contract.

Yep... it's actually one of the best places i've travelled to in Japan. If you're going to head down that way, check out one of the smaller islands... not the main island. The main island is great, but not nearly as beautiful as the smaller islands. You'll be amazed by the culture in okinawa... it's completely different to mainland Japan. It's almost like cramming together Australia and Japan.

...they have this kind of nihonshu called awamori... and some of the bottles contain habu snakes wrapped around the bottom. Quite a site. The sand is also star-shaped... and boy does it sting when the wind picks up.

Hope I could help!

You know, I had my doubts of whether or not to go either, and I went in March for a few days. It was seriously one of the best places Ive been to in Japan! Absolutely loved it! And I agree with what the other post said, the smaller islands are amazing and a different culture..I forgot I was still in Japan! It must be the island way of life, who wouldnt be happy and laid back all the time living on a beautiful island!
We went to Zamami Island...I RECOMMEND IT! so chill, awesome people, great food! and really not too expensive from Naha. Just take a ferry over. Zamami Island is one of the many smaller islands south of Okinawa Island..i loved it!
And from Zamami Island we were able to take another little boat to our own remote island as well, the information center on Zamami was able to help us with that. So definitely go before you leave Japan, you wont regret it! :)
