In this gloomy era of national governments wanting to set back the clock to the moral standards that were in vogue during the 1500s, nations only need to take small steps in order to be called progressive...

I guess that the Dutch gay marriage is progressive, in that it grants EXACTLY the same rights as the straight marriage (in the beginning, adoption was excluded, but they amended that I believe). Mind you, we're not the only ones, but as I remember we were the first, if that deserves any merit...

Re euthanasia, the Netherlands I think have the most liberal legislation around; a doctor observing the proper procedure cannot be tried for murder when he assists in euthanasia. Depending on your degree of enlightenment (or your moral frame of reference, whichever you like better), I'd call that pretty progressive. The only steps that are hitherto missing is a) to stop talking of euthanasia and the criminal system in a single breath (as all Christian Democrats and short-sighted nationalist politicians are fond of doing), and b) to grant elderly people the right to euthanasia, even if they have no physical condition that makes their life unbearable.

Many would argue that gay marriage and euthanasia are not so much progressive but evidence of a country going backwards.

I agree - they probably do... But, though not wanting to spark a debate here (better saved for a separate thread), I disagree. Realize that's just MY personal opinion.

I'm still working on my list of what makes me proud... Yes, I do have one. ;)

Since it was "Swedish National Day" yesterday, and since we're not very good at celebrating it, there was a big discussion on this topic on the radio yesterday: "what makes you proud of Sweden?". Some of the conclusions were the national soccer team and equality between the sexes. I don't think any of these two makes me especially proud of my country though. If anything, I'm proud of Sweden being such a small country but still being up in the front when it comes to so many things: technology, social security, environmental concerns, music, design, etc. I'm proud over the Swedes!

I wouldn't say I was proud to be British, there's a lot not to be proud of but at the same time, cultural diversity and our (relative to most of the world) liberal attitude to asylum seekers...
