dbloom: people like you scare me!!! There's really no hope for the planet as long as you guys (and thousands of others of course) keep on going like that. I feel I need to answer some things here:
If you told me flying from B.A. to Rio or Rio to Quito, etc. was "enviromentally irresponsible" I would ask you who is paying for the flight? You or me? Whose time and money is it?..mine, of course.
I just can't believe you wrote that! You are bragging about saving people's lifes in Guatemala, and that's all very good - but how can you then be so selfish? It's a fact that 1) aeroplanes are The Worst when it comes to emissions of greenhouse gases (amongst other harmful things); 2) that emissions of greenhouse gases destroys our planet; and 3) that we all are gonna have to pay for that in the long run, but especially poor people in poor countries, because they won't be able to move away from floodings and extreme weather. If you're out of time, you just should travel a shorter distance.
how do Europeans and North Americans supposed to get here, by boat, and what about elderly or infirm people who want to travel in South America they supposed to spend 40-50 hours on the bus
Niels is talking about refraining from intracontinental flights, i.e. not from Europe or North America. And same thing here: if you find yourself on a bus for 40-50 hours, maybe you are trying to cover too much land in too little time. Adjust your travels to the amount of time you have!!! How hard can it be? It's just not pleasant to be under stress while on vaccation.
however you hae no right, via the Internet, to some person you really do not even know well, nor have met face to face to tell them they are "irresponsible".
Yes, he does. And he should. Humanity (including you and George Bush and others extremely selfish) needs to start thinking about these kind of things. Now.
