Hi all,

The forum has been going a little while now and although it has been slow in starting, it is picking up a little. As it has been around a little while though, I am interested in what people's experiences with it are.

Are there any features that you are missing?
Are there any topics that you would like to see discussed?

If there is anything at all that you would like to see changed in the forums, let us know! We will be adding some more features to it soon and the more idea I have of what people are missing, the more I can tailor make it for you guys

Avatars! and my username is usually longer then 10 chars... oh yes and my password contains all kinds of (special character) things, that isn't possible either... hey! neither it is in the forum!...

It would also be nice be able to show images in your text, located on a different server...

but I guess I can live with what's already here :)

Hi Wiebe,

Welcome to Travellerspoint and thanks for the feedback! I've been wondering about
increasing the length for usernames - of course, by keeping them small we ensure a
nice tight database, but we could easily up it to 16 characters (does that sound

What special characters do you think you need for passwords and is 6-10 characters
there a good limit?

The special characters problem in the forum is actually a recent one - it used to be
working properly until we moved servers. I have been meaning to chase this up, as it
is causing a lot of posts to break. Thanks for reminding me :) I'll get on to that one
right away.

I don't really feel a need for avatars or images in the forum. I don't find the extra
loading time, possibility of missing, oversized or 18+ images which need constant
moderating worth it! I'm interested in what others are after though, so if there is
enough momentum we may introduce them.

Hey, just a simple one, but how about a counter for who many people have read your post to accompany the replys counter. It lets me know if people are reading my posts but simply dont have an answer.

My 2 cents.

Personally, i'd prefer the response to be in reverse order (i.e the newest on top, not on page 3), although possibly keep the original post/question at the top of the order with all subsequent posts in reverse.

I agree that # of views can be very useful, whilst also a column on the front page to show who the last poster was (as opposed to just saying who the original one was and how many posts there have been). As it already states how long since the last post, is it possible to add the name of the poster here?

Personally i'm not a big fan of avatars (unless they can be turned off in my settings - i.e so i don't have to see them for everybody else), and images would be better if it was just a link (to an image section of the forum, not externally).

This is simply because the majority of my connections is done via remote dial up or from an internet cafe's (often in countries where the network is very slow and prone to collapse), and images/avatars greatly slow already slow things down. And push the cost (especially of remote dial up) up quite considerably. For example, it's no problem if your using broadband at home in London, but remote dial up to the Moroccan network (as i did 3 weeks ago) takes about 30mins just to open my email account and read 1 email, let alone anything else or the whole of my inbox.

I've quit checking some sites/forums i used to frequent because i just don't have the time/inclination/bank balance to sit and wait for avatars/large images to load up.

Oh, and a search facility for posts on a topic/containing a word/by a specific member could be quite useful too?

Hi Peter,
Thanks for setting up this site for us. Eventhough, the arangement is quite basic, the participants are friendly and eager help. Certainly, it costs more to get quicker server and more bandwidth for your site. However, if a person had photos on a different server, he or she can post along with the article, and would not cost you any bandwidth space. If images is out the questions, I wonder if you could add a travelog sections, where one can enter stories of recent trips for other to read.

Have a great day!

All good suggestions! The forum search is highly overdue by now - it will take a little work, but it is high on the priority list for me. The site will actually be moving to a dedicated server soon, so we will have a little more space and control to play around with. The search is something that will benefit from this move.

Images aren't out of the question at all in light of this move - it does take some coding of course as all these things do and it wouldn't be included in the forum (for the exact reasons that gelli mentioned). We would be more likely to make the photography gallery include a 'temporary' repository of pictures - people would be able to upload pictures (up to 15 or so), that would remain on the site for a month. This would be ideal for showing family, etc.. what happened on their trip. It could easily be linked to from diaries, and forum postings. If these shots are high enough quality, they would be included in the permanent photography collection.

iloveflyin, the travelog section already exists pretty much in the form of the diary. Is there something somewhat different that you imagined? It would already serve the purpose you mention.

I like the idea of a 'views' count - will keep it in mind. It will add only a very slight increase in processing time, so no big deal there.

The idea of seeing most recent posts first is interesting. I think some users would have trouble with this mode as it is a bit of a 'power user' kind of feature. I do really like it though and wonder if building it into preferences would be a way to go. I don't use cookies at all on this site, but people can choose some 'main page' templates and such things as part of their user information. This could be extended to include your preferred view of forum entries. In addition to that, I could add an option to view 'in reverse order' at the top of each thread as well.

Thanks for the suggestions and feedback :)

Somewhat in response to the request for 'search for posts by member' request , I've fixed up the member profiles a little.

Not only do they now include the last 10 forum threads that that user was active in, but it also includes any pictures they may have in the photography gallery.

Small, but useful things :)

Hey Pete,

Just something a member emailed me about today which I thought I would post here... when a thread is deleted (SPAM etc.) an email is still sent to all travel helpers for the country selected. This in itself is probably fine but when they click on the link, the page comes up blank as the thread is obviously gone.... can we have an error page?? :)

Thanks bro and good work on the member profiles bit!

iloveflyin, besides the travel diary feature that the site already has which can be used as a simple basic travelogue which is fast from whereever you log in, one of our other big developments for the next months is adding a more advanced travel websites feature (or travelogue, travel blog, travel weblog etc.). This would most likely be available to frequent posters free of charge and would allow photo uploads. As Pete mentioned, this could be an extention to the diary feature but I also like the idea of making it totally separate... something that will take some brooding to make the most of and keep different to whatever else is out there!

First the switch to dedicated and a much better stats program.... :)
