Ok Sam, I fixed that up right away! Wasn't too difficult ;)

Another small similar change (with fairly dramatic effects) that I made a couple of weeks ago was take away the 'country' field when posting new topics in the Travel Companions forum. This will stop the Travel Helpers being notified when obviously people are only looking for companions.

Thanks Sam and Peter for your hard work! I do appreciate your forums!

Hey Peter,

First of all I would like to say that this is an excellent website! I love how you can personalize your posts with emoticons and how it says what country you are from under your name- it helps people who are giving advice or who want advice.

Yah, the avitars is not a good idea. I agree with gelli about download speeds, etc. I am currently home using the internet with broadband but on the road sometimes you only get really slow dial-up connection, and it takes a year to upload! When I worked in the Canadian Rockies we had a pay-per-use internet in res that you put coins in and it was 8 mins. for a buck! The thing took a minute to just dial-up- forget about getting into emails or veiwing graphics. It was a jip but you gotta keep in touch with people . .. . I think the link idea would be a pretty good compromise. :)

About the reverse order thing- I like it the way it is. If others want it, I think putting it into the preferences would be a good idea.

Speaking of links, I'm not really anal about it, but you know how sometimes you have a webpage address you want to post to help someone find more info or something and it is really complicated, so it would be more asthetic to be able to "name" the hyperlink, instead of the automatic hyperlinking that happens when you write the web address. Or perhaps enable the use of simple html?

When you start typing your reply to the thread, and the most recent ones pop up first, I just noticed scrolling down that you don't get all the replies. There are about half of them below as I am typing this. Is there a way that you could make it so all the replies will be under yours as you are typing it, so you could refer back to someone else's, or the original poster's reply when the thread gets a little long?

Hey, either you must be working on this right now, or my computer just went because suddenly it is taking forever to preview my post . ..

OK, You've convinced me that avatars aren't that good. Too bad, I was just getting enthousiastic about mine ;-)

I hope I keep having enough reasons to use this wonderful site, good job!

Ok, a little fix in response to a comment Gelli made in this thread; the forum indexes now include the name of the person who last responded to that thread. While I was fixing that up, I figured that may as well link to the last post as well, so that's been done also.

I also changed 'Posts' to 'Replies', which is probably more useful generally. If anyone thinks differently, let me know.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great suggestions!!!

And also for those of you browsing today (30-01-04), you might notice that the text size is a bit off.... we are currently switching server and I guess something has gone wrong with our styles sheet (for those of you who don't understand, it controls the text sizes across the site among others). I would change it, but Pete is in charge of the switch and I am not sure what can/can't be changed while everything is happening :)

Should be back to normal tomorrow or so...

Cheers,

Sam
ps. THANKS too for all the kind words... I am blushing

Ok, well - in response to the request to see how many views a thread has had, this has now been done :) Of course, it has only started logging this information as of this evening, so it won't reflect very truthfully on the older threads.

Also another thing that I have had discussions with people about regarding the message center: It will now show you whether you have replied to someone message, with a little icon (again, it will only do that for replies from now on)

I also fixed up another thing in the accommodation area. while trying to book some stuff myself, I realized how cumbersome it is if you ended up on one of the city pages, to try and figure out what places had availability. So now, each of those pages includes a search form to search availability in that city only - simple and very nice.

Keep those suggestions coming people :)

Wow - great stuff Peter. Many thanks for all your hard work. great news also on the server front. Gotta run now, but will have a think and see if i can give you some more suggestions during the week.

Thanks again,

Rich

Ok folks, here's something special; a sneak peek at some work on the forum search
function, as requested (and highly overdue):

http://www.travellerspoint.com/forum_search.cfm

I would love any feedback on how this operates. The search allows you to include a
few special operators (AND, OR, NOT) and will happily handle multiple words in your
query. I have made it possible to only search specific forums as well if required. Much
more than that requires some significant other code, which may slow it down
somewhat. Seeing as it's lightning fast at the moment, I'm pretty keen to keep it this
simple.

Hopefully we can get this up and live pretty soon, to help ease the browsing of this
site!

Peter

Hey Peter,

An idea i had earlier which would help me (being entirely selfish here) quite abit - what about an option to show all posts since last login? Is that feasible?
