With so many travellers in this site, I'd like to know the most amazing place where you have been (nature, cities... anything).
I haven't travelled much yet, but one of my best experiences was in Merzouga Dunes, in the Sahara (Morocco). A gorgeous sunrise in a magnificent desert landscape, I'll remeber that for the rest of my life.
There were so many great experinces I'v had while travelling! I'll make them quick, lol...
Paris is my favourite city in the world! One night, my friends and I decided to split up for a couple of hours so we could see the stuff we wanted to see on our own, and I just sat and hungout on one of the bridges and started sketching things (I also sat by the glass pyramid at the Louvre). The city was just so magical and I felt to comfortable. I started talking with a bunch of people and met some great travellers and locals. Then I walked around and found some cute little shops and cafes. It felt like home. By the end of the night I knew the area that I walked around so well that I didn't need a map. One tourist actually came up to me thinking I was a local and asked for directions! LOL, it was great!
Another great travelling anecdote was when I was in New York City and met one of the Beastie Boys and Janeane Garafalo on the same corner within the span of 10 minutes. It was so funny because we were just waiting for some friends and bumped into them by accident. (Plus the shopping there was amazing! ).
My third (last one I promise) was when I was in Interlaaken, Switzerland and when paragliding. The day was so clear and I was up in the air, gliding over the Swiss Alps for what seemed like hours. I'd love to do it again!
This is kind of a place combined with an experience...
I was in Zambia, Africa and I went white water rafting on the Zambezi river.
Not only were the views amazing but the guides were tons of fun and were absolutely hilarious.
Also flipping our raft on the 5+ rapid (6's are suicidal) and feeling like I had a near death experience.
I've never rafted in the States but I don't think that business would last very long in the States without a lawsuit, or codes or regulations that they were breaking. I never felt unsafe but it was very much the real thing. We actually had to work we weren't just along for the ride.
I can't say the same about having loads and loads of places to choose from but the most amazing place I've visited is New Orleans. I've said this in countless forums but this city has captivated me for many reasons.
New Orleans was, to date, the best trip I've been on. The party atmosphere mixed in with the local charm and intrigue was right up my alley. The road trip we took going down there was an experience that brought us (my friend, my sis, and myself) together. You get to find out a lot about a person when you travel with them for about 25-30 hours and spend an entire week with them. We got acquainted with one another in a way that you can only during a trip like the one we took. We also learned quite a bit about the city of New Orleans, and marvelled at the atmosphere of the city. Also, I got to experience Mardi Gras, something that was on my all time To Do list. Plus, I developed a thirst for more New Orleans based knowledge, whether it be real or fiction: I'm looking for a good book to pick up on more New Orleans legends, and also going to buy my first Anne Rice novel. Looks like I have a trip to the bookstore planned in the near future.
Although I like to experience many different destinations, I can definitely see myself going back there many times. If only I could find someplace that would offer the same mix of history, architecture, friendly locals/tourists, and massive party atmosphere!
Wow, what a tough question.
Probably Rio De Janeiro, in particular the Maraca Stadium to see a soccer/football final between Botafogo and Leblon. There was about 240,000 people in the crowd, and it was complete and utter chaos!
If you’re ever in Northern Australia, You have to go to Katherine Gorge. Not many people that I met in Oz when there. It's in between Alice Springs and Darwin so the only people that really find it are people travelling through the heart of Australia.
I travelled the whole of Australia over a year and it was the most amazing experience, but by far the most impressive thing I did was canoe down Katherine Gorge.
Anyone else out there ever been
I agree with Dale. I was in Australia as well doing the full circle and canoeing in the Kathrine Gorge was absolutely fantastic. I went all by myself because my friends wanted to go hiking instead and I loved it so much. It was a very quiet day with hardly any people around. I remember this one par of the gorge in particular where there was a very strong current that you had to paddle against. But I made it :-)
Other favourite places of mine include Whitsunday beach (have you ever heard powder white sand squeeking between your toes?), the deserted beaches along the Ningaloo reef in Western Australia and sitting at the Fatafet cafe along the Creek in Dubai.
The most amazing, exotic place I have been to is Zanzibar just off the coast of Tanzania. The island is totally unspoilt and the scenery and sunsets are some of the best I've seen in the world! I swam with the wild dolphins which was awesome! I did get mugged though and got my passport and airticket stolen but it was all part of the adventure and all worked out well in the end!
I also loved Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe- there are fantastic adventure activities that you can do like gorge swinging, white water rafting and bungi jumping but a bit too expensive for me as they are all charged in $US.
My next trips I am planning are to Easter Island and also St Petersburg so if anyone has been to either I would love some advice!
