Hi Jen,

so where are you down under? I can give you some suggestions for sydney having lived there for the last 10years but not for the other places (as we Sydney siders beleive that Australia IS Sydney .....) and now that I have moved out of sydney I am considered as having fallen off the face of the earth and most of my sydney friends held elaborate mourning rituals where they all deleted my number from their mobile phones. he he

so here goes for Sydney ....
go to a record store and pick up a street mag like 3D or Drum or whatever. there should be flyers about gigs there too. Pubs will also advertise upcomiing gigs.

the Moshtix site is also a pretty good site to find and buy tickets foor local gigs.

some fav venues for me would be....
the Vanguard - Newtown / indie rock and alternative
the Basement - circular Quay / originally a jazz venue but now has a more diverse range a highly skilled musos
the Beach Rd Hotel in Bondi has some pretty good live stuff happening
the Woollahra Pub is a swanky bar that plays some great jazz from both eastablished and up'n'coming artists.

Hope this is helpful!

I think even most Sydney-siders will admit deep down they know Melbourne is where you need to be if you want to see 'good' live music in Australia.

I would second triple j as a good source for ticket info, either that or the local record store which specialises in the music your into.

I will give you a huge tip - working for the event crews and you get to go to all the shows for free and ok you are working but if you stick at it you will be amazed at what you achieve. If you are in Perth it is the best crew to get involved in - EPA
