How much should I plan on spending on a flight from Chicago to Berlin or Munich. I plan on flying into one of the cities and flying out from the other. I am also planning on traveling for about a month before I leave back to the states. An help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Promotional fares start at 350 EUR roundtrip without taxes from Europe to Chicago. Thus you should try to find something for 600 USD, not more. Booking several months ahead of time will save you money. Searching, I found fares for 1000+ USD in September and fares for 800+ USD in October.

If you are short of time and need to book now, you can try www.ltu.com . Their charter flights get very cheap if you book no more than 2 weeks before your flight leaves. Drawback - they only fly from the East Coast and Florida to Germany. Another option might be Lufthansa or British Airways, they often sell tickets at discounted prices for flights leaving within the next 10 days. Check their websites for this, but be warned that the choice of destinations is very limited.

Good search engines for flights are www.orbitz.com, opodo.de, expedia.com. You can book through these sites, but I don't advise it as they charge a service fee. Try to find an airline you like through these search engines (like KLM, Air France, Iberia, British Airways, Lufthansa, Air Lingus) and book directly at the airline's website. Get a flight that requires you to change once at the airline's hub, it will save you money too. You often need to call the airline to book flights like the one you want. If you fly to Berlin and fly out of Munich chances are you are charged one-way prices for your tickets. If you call the airline and explain the situation they sometimes can give you the roundtrip fare.

Be aware that flights to Munich are more expensive in Sep/Oct than to Berlin - it is the Octoberfest. Also consider flying to other cities besides these two. Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Frankfurt am Main should be feasible with the big airlines, smaller airports like Leipzig, Hannover, Cologne will be an option with charter flights.

Have a look at cheapflights.com. It starts with 407$ to Berlin for a round trip. Flights to Frankfurt may be a bit cheaper.
