I have heard about running down a hill (due to their front legs being shorter than their back), but adding in diagonally sounds like a good plan!

Let's hope I am coherant enough to think of that... perhaps I will just pull a Brad Pitt (Legends of the Fall) and go 'mano y mano' with the bear!

"perhaps I will just pull a Brad Pitt..."

Hey B, maybe you should head to Toronto first:

You should Susanna! I pull Brad Pitts four or five times a day... my stunning good looks and body count as two everytime I look in a mirror.

-Tway, that's an interesting story... no body saw me do it you can't prove anything.

Is there actually such a thing as "bear repellent"?!? How does it work? Like I giant can of mosquito repellent or what?

Bear Repellant is concentrated pepper spray. Pepper spray for dogs is at 5%... the stuff for bears is 10%.

It is in a big spray can with a safety lock on it to prevent accidental discharge.

You will have to show ID and sign a register when you buy it as it is considered a restricted pesticide.

If you are flying, you will have to purchase the bear spray in the area that you will be hiking as Airlines don't want these pressurized cans on board.

If you miss the bear or the wind is blowing the wrong direction - get out of Dodge quick because you're going to smell like a nice roasted red pepper dip and they will follow you! Then again, if you miss the bear - you'll likely be the dip anyway...
