I am traveling to Greece & Turkey for two weeks in the beginning of September with my good friend & traveling partner. I cant even tell you how excited we are to discover this beautiful land. We are flying into & out of Athens, and would like to spend about a week in Greece and maybe the same in Turkey. We need all kinds of advice, as we are just starting to plan the details of our travels.
We would like to stay in Athens for just a bit.. a day or two. What should we see? Where to stay? We prefer quaint accommodations with character to sterile hotels. Know if any great place you’ve been dying to share? Any great restaurants, bars or clubs that are a definite Athens experience. We have a multitude of interests from getting to know to culture to also checking out some great night spots.
From Athens we plan to go to a couple Greek Islands. Apart from the popular ones, we don’t know where to start. We would like to have a good mixture of getting to know the culture, having a relaxing time, and possible doing some trekking, hiking or something physical. We are open to suggestions, but love things off of the beaten path. I would love to hear about that great island where you know a family or a place that we’d get a true, unique Greek experience.
Also, what is the best way to get to Turkey from Greece? Is it best to take a flight, or are there ferries available?
Cheers & Many thanks!

An excellent way to feel unique Greek vacation and reach Turkey is starting with Lesvos island. A big, unspoiled traditional place where you can do practically anything you have mentioned (trekking, swimming, eat excellent fish, enjoy great night life and feel the local culture and way of living). Stay in the East coastline villages (Thermi-Mystegna) or the North part of the island (Molivos - magnificent piece of art). Visit Eressos and Sigri (the stoned forest) and try the thousands of Church and Monasteries (like the one in Petra and Agiasos). You will taste excellent local cuisine in Vafios village and fresh fish in Thermi coast. Check : www.e-lesvos.com. Stay at : www.heliatoras.gr. Get there by ferry (Mykonos Ferry leave Peireus Port every day at 12:00 reach the island at 21:00, 34 Euros per person for one way trip).
The great opportunity is that there are daily ferries leaving Mytilini (capital of the island) every day to Ayvalik (the opposite coast in Turkey) for about 6 - 20 Euros (prices vary according to .. demand) and will take just 1 hour ! From Ayvalik you can rent a car and .. visit the Coastline, which is ..super! Don't miss Bergama, Effesus, Izmir and if you can manage and go South, visit Fethiye and Oludeniz .. !
For more info .. just ask !
Hope to enjoy vacation in Greece !
