I am heading to Melbourne from the beggining of October, and am looking for work asap after my arrival. I imagine that bar work is in high demand from fellow working holiday makers, so I was wondering, what are the options when it comes to temporary office work? For example, I have seen 1 week stints with data entry companies being advertised on the net.
Are they hard to come by?
Any views would be appreciated!
You shouldn't have any problems getting temp work in Melbourne. Temp agencies are very popular over here at the moment, if you would like to find some go to www.yellowpages.com.au and search for 'recruitment agency' and you will get hundreds of listings. The biggest ones I know can be found at: www.adecco.com.au, www.manpower.com.au, or try these job websites mycareer.com.au and www.jobs.com.au.
I've been temping in Sydney for the last 3 months and the 3 recruitment agencies I registered with upon arrival have been very friendly and helpful in finding me work. You just have to let them know how long you'll be around for and what type of work it is you fancy doing and they let you know of suitable assignments. You can work short assignments ie, 2 days or a week. Or you can land longer assignments up to 3 months You usually have to do typing/word/excel/powerpoint/data entry testing beforehand, so that prospective employers can see how competent you are in these areas - but provided you've done basic office work before you should be fine.
Thanks very much for the web addresses, and also katie for the reassurance. Has put my mind to rest...a bit!!!
Katie - any chance you could tell me what agencies you registered with and where you found them?
I found the best agencies to be Hugo Personnel in Bourke St, or Select Appointments in Collins St - all of their staff were really helpful and friendly.
I might suggest that you give them a call first - they dont seem to like walk-ins here for some reason!
Hope that helps!
