hi, i'm going to New Zealand in a week it will of course be there winter. i dont have any plans as to what i'm going to do-kinda go with the flow depending on who i meet. i was wondering if anyone could help me with what i need to take.i mean how cold will it really be?will i need a sleeping bag? ect ect. anywa help is appreciated. thanks hanna
It depends a lot on where in New Zealand you'll be going. On the North Island the temperature will be around 10 C (15 C north of Auckland, even), while on the South Island it'll be around or just above freezing, and quite a bit below during the night in the Southern Alps, where there's also a decent chance of snow.
Best advice is to bring many things you can layer over each other, so you can deal with the relatively large difference between day and night, and just always be comfortable. (On a sunny day, it can still be quite warm during the day even high up in the Southern Alps. I remember hiking in a t-shirt in early August near Lake Tekapo, and being hot - but needing two extra layers when I got in the shade. And two days later it was snowing.)
A sleeping bag won't be needed, unless you plan on going camping. Hostels always provide linen, and most don't even allow the use of a sleeping bag to fend off bedbugs.
i went there in the in winter and was still able to wear board shirts but i think jeans light sweater and definatly a waterproof jacket since it will drizzle and be grey and foggy alot.
