In october i will begin my yearlong volunteering trip through central/south america. I will be starting in guatemala and will need some serious intensive spanish lessons. Any advice on the best area/school to study in? I've heard Antigua is a little overrun with the schools...
As for the volunteering, IN each area I stay in I would like to volunteer with an animal orgainization and a humanitarian one-any advice there..? Thanks all!

Can't help with the Spanish schools I'm afraid,
my advice would be to get a running start and buy a
self-teach book, and make time to read it before you go.

There is a directory of free and grass-roots volunteer
opportunities in South America here:

www.volunteersouthamerica.net

There are several volunteer Ops in Guatemala listed on the site.

If you're headed down to Bolivia try: www.intiwarayassi.org
I heard on the grapevine that they urgently need volunteers.

WARNING: If anyone follows the first link (www.volunteersouthamerica.net), you will find a good sized list of volunteer info sites. DO NOT FOLLOW THE LINK NAMED ARCASGUATEMALA.COM...the first page on that site is infected with a trojan virus. I was lucky, my virus scanner picked it up and deleted it.

I have now removed the www.arcasguatemala.com link from www.volunteersouthamerica.net
and informed ARCAS about the problem.

Thanks for the info Belize Me.

ARCAS is a long established volunteer program in Guatemala, it is not a fake or phoney site, I don't want to discourage people from volunteering there.

FYI The Trojan was detected by McAfee virusscan, not Norton, the Trojan name was "Generic Downloader.o"

Sorry to hi-jack your thread Dorty.

I definitely recommend Spanish lessons in Quetzaltenango (Xela) Guatemala. Antigua is only good if you're more into partying than actually learning. You would still learn some basic things though. There are a ton of different language schools in Xela, most are really good. And if you get to one and are disapointed, you could probably be studying at a different one by the next day. All the language schools have contacts to volunteer organizations. Usually you have to have a certain level of Spanish achieved first, then they will help you get in contact with the type of organization you want to work with.
