I think I'm going to Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos in August. What is the temperature like, and how much rain can I expect? Based on the weather, can anyone suggest where to start and finish, or is all of August pretty much the same everywhere?
Thanks!

I noticed that I am the first to respond to this post. There is a reason for this: nobody can predict the weather.

I suggest you go to www.weather.com and put in the towns and cities you intend to visit. Then take a look at the seasonal averages in rainfall and temperature. This could give you more help than someone looking out the window and telling you what to expect.

BTW: I'm in Bangkok, and if you hurry, you can enjoy the rain we are getting right now. Earlier it was sunny and hot. In an hour it will be sunny and hot, again.

In Cambodia, August means the middle of rainy season. So go armed with raincoat and necessary rain gadgets you can think about. This is specially when you plan to go around by motorbike. And if possible, try to get your accommodation that has a balcony so that one day you may have to sit there watching the rain falling the whole day!! Weather, of course it would be cool during raining (especially when you get caught in it). Generally it is hot and humid when no rain (30-35 C or more), and much more just before the rain starts.

The upside : the temples of Angkor are much more the pleasant places to visit as rainy season keeps the big crowd or big tour groups away. So taking pictures of the temple is more possible to get the temple without herds and herds of human being. Other places of Cambodia : the countryside will be green - the paddy field, the forest, the village - and less dusty.

It's warm year round. The rain does not normally fall all day long, usually it stops in an hour or so. A lot of the rain falls during the night.

In between the sudden rainfall there is plenty of bright sun to fry your skin. You can purchase an umbreller pretty cheap in Asia. Don't go walking around in expensive shoes that will be destroyed by rain. Figure on getting soaked once or twice anyway, dress accordingly. If you are using sandals, flip flops, or bare foot - avoid walking through greenish colored water - it's usually raw sewage. (You want to avoid an infection through a scrape, blister, or cut on your feet.)

There will be some limited flooding when the drains can't handle the deluge all at once. Stay in a second floor hotel/hostel if flooding is a concern. (I usually aavoid the first floor rooms anyway, always figure someone can easily climb in my window. I choose a higher floor, make the sucker work a little to break in!)

Take advantage of the rain to catch up on your sleep, eat in a restaurant, hit a bar. Eventually the rain stops. Lived in Vietnam for two years, seemed to rain when I was going to work and coming home. Rest of the time was okay.
