I'm almost positive someone already started a thread on this, but I can't find it for the life of me. So here it goes again...

A recent post about pizza (mm...) had me thinking back to a trip my sister and I took to Florida some years back. After a very late flight and a long drive, we got to the hotel and decided to order pizza. So, without giving it a second thought, we asked for exactly what we would have asked for at home:

1 all-dressed pizza
1 Coke
1 7-UP

Now, for us that meant a pizza with cheese, pepperoni, green peppers and mushrooms, plus a can of soft-drink each. What we ended up with was this crazy pizza concoction featuring every item on the menu plus 2 two-litre bottles of pop. No wonder the bill was $40!

Anyhow, on every trip I end up discovering that something I take for granted actually means something entirely different elsewhere. What surprises have people been, well, surprised by?

When I ordered a "Screwdriver" in a bar in Prague, they just looked at me with question marks in their eyes. I tried "Vodka and orange juice, please...?". The question marks in their eyes grew larger, some heads were shaken, but I got served - a glass full of vodka and a small tetrapak with orange juice on the side.

When travelling in Iceland I ordered a hot dog with everything, which in Iceland is: ketchup, mustard, fried onion, raw onion and relish-mayonnaise sauce. But where I was they have all that and cocktail sauce (ketchup and mayonnaise) and that is disgusting!

That's what they call "salsa golf" in Argentina, it's super, I love it!!!

Mayonnaise

It never occured to me that they wouldn't have proper stuff somewhere like Australia. But that discusting sickly sweet stuff they sell under the name "mayonnaise" is just inedible!

Mayonnaise...hmmm I have an issue with mayonnaise! it seems to come on everything!

When my boyfriend and I visited Vancouver, they put mayonnaise on EVERYTHING, even a muffin with scrambled eggs. I do like mayonnaise but not that much, I don't often eat it to be honest. My boyfriend really hates mayonnaise but the people in restaurants there just ignored him when he asked for his food without it and put it on anyway!

Generally the food we ordered in Vancouver came out in a totally unexpected way! I ordered a noodle salad and got a bit of lettuce, grated carrot and hard crunchy noodles broken up on top ie they hadn't cooked the noodles first!? I was very puzzled! maybe it's just a Vancouver thing?

We also went to Subway for lunch and the people working there didn't seem to get that we only wanted beef and tomato on the sub, no pickle, no mustard, no cheese ONLY beef and tomato...I ended up shouting at them because they looked at me as if I was weird and kept going to put cheese on the sub!

Oh dear, I think ordering one thing and getting another is all part of the fun of travelling!

I ordered a pizza in Italy and the guy asked me if I wanted egg with it.

"No problem I thought, when in Rome..."

The guy bought the pizza out with a hard boiled egg

I was eating out in Chiang Mai, Thailand, as much as I love Thai food, I fancied a break from it, so ordered a vegetarian pizza, thinking it would come with onions, peppers, tomatoes & mushrooms. But no, it came with green beans, carrots & potatos on it.

I discovered the same thing in Paris - although my Grandfather had warned me about it. I was also unpleasantly suprised by "ketchup" in New Zealand (which is just crushed tomatoes! where's the sweet stuff?) and "salad" in Belfast (coleslaw and mayo do not a salad make). Bacon in Belfast also came as a surprise - instead of thin, fatty strips like at home, everyone eats thick, ham-like slices. Not bad!

And although I'd heard about it, the coffee in France and Italy was an excellent surprise. Why doesn't everyone have such standards? Down with filtered deli coffee! Up with espresso!
