Hi everyone, me and my gf should be heading off to Ireland for 10 days together in August. However driving is not an option so we will be relying on public transport to get around. I was wondering what people thought of this plan:
Day1: Shannon Airport > Limerick > Galway
Day2: Galway city or visit Aran Islands and P.M. train/bus > Dublin
Day4: Dublin > cork
Day5: cork > Kenmare
Day6: Kenmare > Killarney > ring of kerry tour
Day7: Kilarney > Dingle
Day8: Dingle > Cloghane
Day9: Cloghane > Tralee > Limerick
Day10: Limerick > back to Airport
What about hitchiking to get to some of these places? What that be a safe option in Ireland?
Thanks in advance for any help,
well u aint giving a whole lot of time for Limerick or Galway, but its your call where you want to spend most of your time.
thats also a lot of travelling around but if your ok with 5hr bus journeys then itl work.
as for hitch hiking.... not a great idea. first of itl b difficult to get people to pick ye up and then can u trust them? if u did it 10 years ago u probably would have had no problem with hitch hiking but i couldnt advise it now.
as for getting from Galway to Dublin the Train pretty expensive. the buses from galway to dublin go every half hour by two main companies, bus eireann are more expensive (not by much) and not as comfortable) but they do more services and their last bus leaves Galway at 8.30p.m. (they leave on the half hour every hour ie 10.30a.m., 11.30a.m., 12.30p.m...etc)
and they leave from eyre square so ul have no problem getting to them.
City link buses are cheaper and more comfortable, but their last bus leaves Galway at 6.00p.m (although they have one extra bus at 2.00a.m (better check that time cos its not deffinite))
they leave from near the Radisson SAS hotel. bout 5min walk from eyre square.
dont know if thats gona be any help but hopefully t will
Wow! You are squeezing a lot into your 10 days! But go for it!
You shouldnt have too much problem with transport between those places. My advice would be to always check out the bus times beforehand. Some places arent serviced frequently, although you will have lots of options between Shannon, Limerick, Galway and DUblin. There are buses every couple of hours.
Hitchiking is still relatively safe in Ireland, and lots of tourists opt for this on the Ring of Kerry. Irish people, especially in the coutryside, are very good to hitchikers.
The Aran Islands are definitely worth a visit, but again, check out ferry times in advance so you dont get stuck out there if you dont want to. If you are planning on overnighting try to book accomodation in advance. The islands are very popular with tourists in the summer months.
I wish you had longer than 10 days! The route you are doing is one of the most beautiful in the country, and you will have an excellent time!! If you need any help with anything, let me know. i am from Limerick, lived in Galway for a while, know Cork and Kerry very well and have been to the Aran Islands.
Good luck with the planning!
