What is the best travel guide to italy and greece?

Is it essential to sleep in hostels or can you manage with cheap hotels???

I like the Lonely Planet series, but I cannot guarantee that the Italy or Greece edition is any good. I suggest you look at special guides designed for interrail travellers, these books are often better for this purpose than an "allround" guide book like LP.

Italy is very expensive, so I would definitely go for hostels, especially when travelling alone with nobody to share costs with. You won't find a 2+ star hotel room for 8 EUR in Italy like you would in Thailand. Be happy if you find a hostel bed that is less than 20 EUR!

BTW, if you are interrailing, consider taking alot of night trains to save on costs and travelling time.

Many thanks for the reply.

I will be travelling with two other people.

Ive seen on the " accomodation " part of this site some hotels in greece for 8 pounds a night(this was when i selected for 3 people-what does private mean? does it mean 1 room with just us three in or what???), not that bad and when we get to turkey it should be cheaper???

what special interrail guides are there??
