cherry1219 has indicated that this thread is about Czech Republic

I will be taking a train from Prague to Krakow. I understand that there is only an overnight train. How safe is this for women traveling alone? chris

safe enough. Just hook up with fellow travellers, and watch your belongings carefully. There's usually a lot of pickpocketing happening on night trains (not only in Eastern Europe).

Too much is made of how unsafe sleeper trains are, of course a lot of pick-pocketing occurs, but so long as you use the same precautions you would anywhere else (in a hostel for instance) you'll be fine. Being a woman wouldn't make any difference either because you don't have people being attacked/mugged on a sleeper train, the crime is almost always stealing things from people while they're sleeping. Probably the thing you'll have to worry about most is getting put in a car with some snoring men - this seems to happen on every sleeper train I've ever been on!

You should be fine Chris although if I were you I would try and hook up with some other backpackers. Safety in numbers.
We had a really dodgy train ride when we did the same route last year.
Heard some noise down the carrage and went to investigate and saw three of the dodgiest guys standing in the doorway of another cabin, told them I was just trying to get passed to go to the toilet and they showed me a knife and told me to go back to sleep.
About 10 minutes later they pulled the emergency brake and we saw them run down the end of the train and jump off.
Heaps of other weird stuff happened as well, like dudes walking past and staring in our window when they thought we were asleep.
Im hope it was just a one off and I don't want to put you off but thought I'd share my experience, got to say I was shiting myself and I was with two girls and a mate. (One of the girls asked if she could bunk with us because people were trying to unlock her door).

I can asure you that trains in Central Europe are just as safe as in other European countries.
