As a fond user and member of TP, I'm sad to say that another great travel site, couchsurfing.com (where I was also a member), does no longer exist. It was a network where the members provided free accomodation for each other, all over the world. I don't know exactly why it went down, but it seems like it was an accident. Check this out...

Just thought this might be interesting - but sad - news for all travel addicts.

That is sad news indeed... but also a bit hard to believe that hired professionals could let something like this happen... let's hope the initiative will be revived by someone.

Not making the occassional complete backup of the database, next to the failed incremental backups, seems to me to be the third critical error. Not running a RAID system (from the sounds of it), the fourth.

Once having lost something like three months of database changes, I feel their pain keenly, but yikes, I'm amazed that it took three years before they got to learn this particular lesson. (Then again, three years seems to be the average life expectancy of hard disks, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.)

Either way, even though I never knew the site, it's sad to see any travel community die. :(

Sounds to me that like they were using the hosting services of EDS or IBM. Bad luck.

Looking at the site they are going to fire up couchsurfing version 2.0 in the future, so not all is lost for those who use it.

Yup, Fantastically, Version 2 should be live in about 10days time. As a serial user (but sadly, never host because i live somewhere obscure and never eve have had a request), it*s great news that it will be back!

Couchsurfing is dead. Long live couchsurfing

Are you serious?!?! I get loads of requests all the time, and I live only like one hour away from you!!! I'm gonna send you a request as soon as it all works again - but then again, maybe the lack of requests doesn't really matter regarding the lack of a home... :)
